Methodology

Aggregate travel time to work (Census table B08013) divided by workers 16+ who did not work from home (table B08303), 1-year American Community Survey estimates for places with 65,000+ population. This measures where workers live, not where they work.

Puerto Rico and other US territories are not included. Rankings use competition ranking: tied values share a rank.

Frequently asked questions

Is this about traffic in the city?

Not exactly. It is the commute of people who live in the city, wherever they work, so bedroom suburbs of big metros often have long averages.
