Methodology
World Bank World Development Indicators, series SP.DYN.LE00.IN (Life expectancy at birth, total, years), compiled from UN Population Division estimates, national statistics offices and Eurostat. Latest available year per economy; aggregates excluded.
Economies are listed under their World Bank names. Regional, income-group and other aggregates are excluded. Each row uses that economy's latest available year, and figures more than four years older than the most common latest year are left out so the ranking stays comparable; see the Year column. Some names are shortened from the World Bank's formal names (for example “South Korea” for “Korea, Rep.”).
Frequently asked questions
Does life expectancy mean most people die at that age?
No. It is an average from birth. In countries with high infant mortality, people who survive childhood often live well beyond the average.
